Serpentshrine Cavern is the 25-player Tier 5 raid hidden under Coilfang Reservoir in Zangarmarsh, and it remains one of the sharpest execution checks in The Burning Crusade. This guide covers each of the six bosses, the attunement, the resistance gear you need, and the mistakes that cause most wipes.
Phase 2 Raids: Where SSC Fits in Tier 5
Serpentshrine Cavern shares Tier 5 with Tempest Keep: The Eye. Most guilds raid both in the same week. SSC and The Eye drop the same token types, so the two raids together complete your Tier 5 set.
The six bosses can be killed mostly in any order. Lady Vashj is the exception. Her platform only opens after the other five are dead, because each kill activates one of the consoles that power the bridge.
| Boss | Core mechanic | Special requirement | Tier 5 token |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydross the Unstable | Frost and nature form swaps | Frost and nature resistance tanks | None |
| The Lurker Below | Spout rotation, submerge adds | Must be fished up | None |
| Leotheras the Blind | Demon form, inner demons | Warlock to tank demon form | Gloves |
| Fathom-Lord Karathress | Three guards, Cataclysmic Bolt | Interrupts on the priest guard | Leggings |
| Morogrim Tidewalker | Murloc waves, Watery Grave | Strong AoE | None |
| Lady Vashj | Tainted Core shield phase | All five bosses dead | Helm |
Serpentshrine Cavern Attunement Guide
In the original game, you entered SSC by completing The Cudgel of Kar’desh. Blizzard later removed the requirement. TBC Classic also dropped it as later phases arrived.
Heads up
Attunement rules change by realm type and content phase. Before you farm signets, check your realm’s current phase notes to confirm whether SSC still needs the Cudgel.
What You Need
- A level 70 character.
- The Reservoir Key for heroic Coilfang dungeons. It requires Honored with Cenarion Expedition.
- The Earthen Signet, which drops from Gruul the Dragonkiller in Gruul’s Lair.
- The Blazing Signet, which drops from Nightbane in Karazhan.
- A group that can clear heroic The Slave Pens.
Quick steps: The Cudgel of Kar'desh
- Reach Honored with Cenarion Expedition and buy the Reservoir Key.
- Enter heroic The Slave Pens and find Skar’this the Heretic.
- Accept The Cudgel of Kar’desh.
- Loot the Earthen Signet from Gruul.
- Loot the Blazing Signet from Nightbane.
- Return both signets to Skar’this to finish attunement.
| Signet | Source | Raid size |
|---|---|---|
| Earthen Signet | Gruul the Dragonkiller | 25 |
| Blazing Signet | Nightbane (summoned) | 10 |
Once you are attuned, enter Coilfang Reservoir and take the central pipe down to the SSC portal.
Raid Prerequisites and Composition
SSC tests gear harder than Karazhan or Gruul. You need resistance sets for Hydross, a strong warlock for Leotheras, and good interrupters for Karathress.
| Role | Typical count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Main and off tanks | 3-4 | One frost and one nature resistance tank for Hydross |
| Warlock tank | 1 | Tanks Leotheras demon form |
| Healers | 6-7 | Add one on Hydross and Vashj progression |
| Melee DPS | 5-6 | Need strong positional discipline on Lurker |
| Ranged DPS | 8-9 | Needed for Vashj’s elementals and Morogrim’s murlocs |
For Hydross, aim for about 365 resistance on each specialist tank. That value is the soft cap against a level 73 boss. Below it, the tank takes resisted damage that healers cannot keep up with as stacks grow.
Hydross the Unstable
Hydross has two forms. He starts in frost form inside his circle. When he is dragged across the edge of the circle, he swaps to nature form. Every swap spawns four elemental adds.
In frost form, he applies Mark of Hydross to the raid. In nature form, he applies Mark of Corruption. Both marks stack every 15 seconds and raise damage taken: 10%, 25%, 50%, 100%, 250%, then 500%. The swap resets the marks.
How the fight works:
- The frost tank pulls Hydross and holds him inside the circle.
- Around the third or fourth mark, the nature tank takes aggro outside the line.
- The frost tank pulls him across, and the boss swaps form.
- Ranged DPS and AoE kill the four adds at the swap point.
- Repeat until he dies. He enrages at the 10-minute mark.
Spread out to limit Water Tomb in frost form. Cleanse or heal through Vile Sludge in nature form.
Veteran's tip
Practise the tank swap on the trash first. A swap that goes slow by even two seconds pushes the raid into the 250% stack, and that is where Hydross attempts usually end.
The Lurker Below
Lurker does not stand in the room waiting for you. Someone fishes in the Strange Pool, and the boss surfaces. The raid stands on the platforms around the pool.
His key ability is Spout. He turns a slow circle and blasts everyone above water. You dodge it by jumping into the water before the beam reaches you, then climbing back out. Melee also have to watch for Whirl, which knocks back and hurts those close to him.
Keep at least one player within melee range at all times. If nobody is in melee, he casts Water Bolt on the raid in a steady stream.
After about 90 seconds above water, he submerges. Coilfang Ambushers and Coilfang Guardians spawn on the platforms. Kill the Guardians in melee and burn the Ambushers with ranged before he resurfaces.
Common Lurker wipe causes:
- Jumping late during Spout.
- Swimming far out and pulling the Coilfang Frenzy fish.
- Leaving no player in melee range while he is surfaced.
Leotheras the Blind
Three Greyheart Spellbinders keep Leotheras banished. Kill them first, then he becomes active.
He swaps forms every minute.
| Form | Main threat | Who tanks |
|---|---|---|
| Humanoid (night elf) | Whirlwind, which wipes threat | Warrior tank |
| Demon | Chaos Blast on the target | Warlock tank |
| Final split at 15% | Leotheras and his Shadow both active | Warrior and warlock together |
In humanoid form, Whirlwind clears his threat table. Melee must back out, and the tank picks him up again once the spin ends.
In demon form, he casts Insidious Whisper on five players. Each one fights their own inner demon, which only they can damage. If you do not kill your demon in time, you are mind-controlled. Healers and low-DPS specs need to practise this. Bring a weapon or spell you can actually kill it with.
At 15%, Leotheras splits. The humanoid form and a Shadow of Leotheras both attack. The warlock keeps the Shadow, and the raid burns the boss.
Fathom-Lord Karathress
Karathress fights with three guards. Each guard grants him a new ability when it dies.
- Fathom-Guard Caribdis (priest): heals allies, summons a cyclone and casts Tidal Surge.
- Fathom-Guard Tidalvess (shaman): drops totems, including Spitfire Totem.
- Fathom-Guard Sharkkis (hunter): fights with a pet and fires shots and Multi-Shot.
The standard kill order is Tidalvess first, then Sharkkis, then Caribdis, then Karathress. Her heals stretch the fight badly if your interrupt rotation slips. Set three interrupters on her, each with a fixed order.
Karathress himself casts Cataclysmic Bolt on mana users. It deals damage equal to half of the target’s maximum health, so heal targets right after it lands.
Karathress drops the Tier 5 leggings tokens. After he dies, Seer Olum appears. He matters for the Black Temple attunement chain.
Morogrim Tidewalker
Morogrim is a gear check for your AoE. His Tidal Wave is a frontal cone that also slows attack speed, so tank him facing away from the raid.
About every 50 seconds, he casts Earthquake. Murloc waves then pour in from both sides of the room. Mages, warlocks and paladins with Consecration should kill them as they stack. Healers stay on the raid for the earthquake damage.
Watery Grave teleports four players into water bubbles and damages them when they burst. Heal those players fast.
At 25%, the murloc waves stop. He summons Water Globules that chase players and burst on impact. Kite them or kill them, then finish the boss.
Lady Vashj
Vashj is the fight that gates Tier 5. It runs in three phases.
Phase 1 (100% to 70%)
Vashj casts Shock Blast on the tank, Static Charge on random players and Entangle on those near her. Static Charge damages everyone close to its target, so spread out. Ranged DPS should stay at max range.
Phase 2 (shield phase)
At 70%, she becomes immune behind a shield powered by four Shield Generators. The raid splits up to cover the room.
- Tainted Elementals spawn. Kill them to drop a Tainted Core.
- A player loots the core and becomes rooted. They throw it to the next player, and the core moves down the line to a generator console.
- Enchanted Elementals walk toward Vashj and empower her. Kill them before they reach her.
- Coilfang Striders fear players and must be kited.
- Coilfang Elites need a tank.
Every generator you disable takes down part of the shield. Once all four are down, she becomes vulnerable again.
Phase 3
Toxic Spore Bats fly overhead and drop poison clouds. Move out of them. Vashj returns to her phase 1 abilities and adds Persuasion, a mind control. Burn her before the bats fill the floor.
Vashj drops the Tier 5 helm tokens and Vashj’s Vial Remnant. The remnant is part of the Vials of Eternity chain for Mount Hyjal.
Veteran's tip
Assign the core path before the pull, with names on each spot. Most Vashj wipes happen because two players think the core is coming to them and nobody actually catches it.
Tier 5 Token Groups
SSC tokens use the Vanquished name. Here is who can use each version.
| Token type | Classes |
|---|---|
| Vanquished Champion | Paladin, Rogue, Shaman |
| Vanquished Defender | Warrior, Priest, Druid |
| Vanquished Hero | Hunter, Mage, Warlock |
Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting
- Hydross tank dies at swap: check resistance totals, not just gear pieces. Below about 365, the specialist tank falls behind.
- Lurker kills half the raid: someone stood above water for Spout. Call it out early on voice.
- Leotheras mind controls a healer: that player could not kill their inner demon. Give them a damage plan or a trinket before the pull.
- Karathress fight goes long: your interrupt rotation on Caribdis is too loose.
- Vashj enters phase 3 with no cooldowns: do not spend heroism or burst during the shield phase.
Expected Result
Your first clear should drop two to three Tier 5 tokens from Leotheras, Karathress and Vashj. You also get Vashj’s Vial Remnant for Hyjal progress. Most guilds get Hydross, Lurker and Morogrim down early. Leotheras and Karathress take a few nights. Vashj takes the longest, often weeks of progression on fresh realms.
If you keep raiding into later expansions, the same assignment discipline carries straight into an Icecrown Citadel progression night.
